Choose filenames that explain themselves
Select a small folder to organize first. Use a consistent pattern such as date, subject and sequence, keeping original filenames in a separate index when they carry useful context.
Use dates only when you know what they represent. A scan date and the date of the original document are different facts.
Test the pattern on a few files before renaming a collection. Keep a backup and check that links or applications do not depend on the old names.
